Today, OCPS honors Juneteenth. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but it took until June 19, 1865, for the news to reach enslaved African Americans in Texas. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery.
