Yes, Dave Smith will be DEFENDING the resolution: "Government restrictions on the immigration of peaceful & healthy people make sense from a libertarian standpoint, especially in present-day America." The Alex Nowrasteh will OPPOSE the resolution. thesohoforum.org

Yes, but capitalism is a system of profit AND loss. Profits encourage investment & risk-taking; losses encourage parsimony & prudence. The one is just as important to capitalism as the other. An evil of crony capitalism (cRapitalism): it privatizes profit & socializes loss.

WORTH (or MERIT) to describe pay for work are misleading. Robert Reich & Bernie Sanders do worthless, meritless work. But others have a right to pay big $ for this work. It's THEIR CUSTOMERS' $, not mine. In a free market for labor, $ tracks what the market will bear, full stop.

To those who say we libertarians have no sense of power & politics, I respond: They have no sense of history. Slavery & serfdom prevailed for millennia, yet those boots on our throats were abolished. Radical change toward liberty happens rarely, but can happen if we persist.

I had 2 mothers, a birth-mother & stepmother I lived with (she had been married to my mother's brother, then married my father, who won custody since birth-mommy was a Commie) & they hated each other. So Mother's Day was always an ordeal for me. No more, since both are gone.

Lively, often funny, Soho Forum debate between Andrew Heaton 🎩 vs Eric Brakey 🌲🦔 on the proper strategy for libertarians. (Slight problem with sound quality--clearer in podcast version.) bit.ly/43pHFmM

Typically sensible remarks from Buddy Menton on perils of eliminating cash, w/remarks from libertarian like me. As an 80-year old Manhattanite, I employ a lot of service workers, all of whom I tip (generously) in cash, since I imagine they'll decide to keep more of it.

In 2023, the AVERAGE total compensation for CEOs of S&P 500 firms ran $17.7 million, less than 1/2 2023 pay of Tom Cruise. $17.7 mm x 500=$8.9 billion, enough to pay federal gov't bills for less than a day. Re $ waste, CEO pay aptly ranks 500th on my personal list of priorities.

Chief, libertarians less important than hiccups in hailstorms? Liberty victories: abolition of slavery & serfdom, Soviet Union collapse, Bill of Rights framing, capitalism's rise) were LIB victories, even if not mainly brought about by strict LIBS. So we'll play a future role.

I'd warned the great Glenn Loury: If he keeps hosting dissenting guests, the Manhattan Institute (main backer) would abandon The Glenn Show. Glenn acknowledged my foresight, but his integrity got the better of him. I'm proud of my one interview w/him. youtube.com/watch?v=WCgGZ6…

Key Comment: Peter Beinart to Glenn Loury: Israeli Jews often treated by Israeli Arab hospital workers, the very people otherwise vilified as violent. Give them even 2nd-class citizenship rights & Israeli Jews are willing to trust them with their lives. youtube.com/watch?v=Z5aTr3…

Re college grad time: Many I knew graduated cum laude (pronounced "lowdy"), some magna & summa cum laude. I graduated from Brandeis U in 1966 summa cum lousy. Yet my career roughly paralleled theirs. Meant as reassuring words to those like me who sleep-walked through college.

Re plunge in labor force participation by prime-age men 25-54. Is major factor jump in "disability"? See below interview w/scholar who has studied the trend: "The major factor is the disability system itself. That it's become more accessible." econtalk.org/autor-on-disab…
