Sharing some of the findings of ECOMIX at #SETACVienna - one of 5 research projects looking at river pollution in the UK - based Department of Environment and Geography. Brilliant!

We collected the last samples from our dual-isotope labelled mesocosm experiment for QUANTUM Ana Castro-Castellon, DPhil & Sydney Enns with another team from Penny Johnes , REFRESH, Drs Charlotte Briddon and James McDonald. We found the snails like a sensor-ride.

The snails also like a paddle-ride! These are snails added to our mesocosm experiment for QUANTUM WP4 Ana Castro-Castellon, DPhil Sydney Enns

A joy to spend time with the QUANTUM Freshwaters team & Penny Johnes Vital work to find ways to farm that will deliver beef/milk sustainably & not trash our rivers The UK could lead the world, understanding & hence policy. The challenge is to get politicos to understand & deliver!

More fieldwork fun for QUANTUM and REFRESH teams today. A visit from WelshRiversUnion🐟🦆🌳, then started site decommissioning following completion of our experiments, and marked up a sample grid for soil coring on our slurry amendment plots. Curious cattle made leaving the site tricky!

Final day of sampling today for the University of Bristol team at our @QUANTUMFreshWtr field site, and the Exeter Biosciences team completing their field ecotoxin exposure experiments. A fantastic field site for the project. Many thanks to the farmers and villagers for their support.

Great article by Phoebe Weston The Guardian about ECOMIX - 1 of 5 research projects examining sources of river pollution. This project at Department of Environment and Geography led by Alistair Boxall examines chemicals. They collected 20,000 samples & have been continuously monitoring for over a year.

Ibuprofen can affect fish hatching, diclofenac impacts fish livers, flea treatments kill off the insects fish & birds eat - a cocktail of meds, pesticides, cleaning products, road runoff is poisoning our rivers - no wonder fish numbers are plummeting. theguardian.com/environment/20…
