Michelle and I want to do our part to give all you parents a break today, so we’re reading “The Word Collector” for Chicago Public Library. It’s a fun book that vividly illustrates the transformative power of words––and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

It's been a long time coming. 5th grade artists created these and then winter break, snow, rain...and then closures. Today, I placed them around our flagpole. Courage. Love. Diligence. We need these messages now more than ever. Thank you 5th grade.

It’s not selfish for educators to bring up concerns about exposure to COVID-19. It’s not even self-care. It’s basic self-preservation. And that’s often motivated by the human desire to be alive for our loved ones. Saying, “I want to live” shouldn’t be a controversial stance.

It’s good to know the powerful United States economy depends on public schools. Now explain why public schools have to hold fundraisers, bake sales, and have students donate Kleenex.

Please don’t start a re opening schools protest called #teacherlivesmatter. It’s offensive to black people and their struggle. I agree that there are a lot of stupid ignorant plans to open school right now but that slogan ain’t it. Especially when 80% of teachers are white.

New rule: If you don’t have a national plan for dealing with Covid-19, you don’t get to weigh in on what local schools should do.
