Day two of the puffin burrow count on the Isle of May conducted by UKCEH & NatureScot. A hood chunk of the island now covered. The sound of clickers clicking drifts over the Isle.

Some wonderful news; following last years disappointment (they did not breed) Arctic Terns are back on the Isle of May and nesting. The blog has the story: isleofmaynnr.wordpress.com

Seabirds, such as kittiwakes, gannets, and puffins, are key indicators of marine health. Paulo Bessa has spent the past week as part of a NatureScot team surveying seabird populations on the Shiant Isles. In today’s blog he explains why. #WorldOceansDay orlo.uk/Yrc8o

Following an outbreak of avian influenza last July, just at the very end of the breeding season, we have over 200 fewer Guillemot (blue dots) visiting the North Gully colony this year. There are 238 fewer Guillemot in photo two, one less Razorbill (taken same date a year apart)

This is the sort of place your helium birthday balloons end up when you let them go, or worse still, in the oceans where there's a good chance they'll end up in the belly of a whale, a turtle or a seabird. Dispose of them responsibly, please! 🙏 National Trust for Scotland Marine Conservation Society

Manx Shearwater chick EM82816 was last seen on 26th August, its wing about 10mm short of fledging length. It was found exhausted on a Brazilian beach on 8th October, 43 days later. So 216km a day and in reality a lot more than that
