Absolutely thrilled to share that my work on the local politics of land reform in Peru has been awarded the 2024 New Researcher Prize by the Economic History Society Economic History Society! Sharing the joy with incredible colleagues at Lund, TCD @iris_siedler and Oxford Robert Yee! 🎉

Christopher M. Meissner Douglas Irwin @ReddingEcon Important, when considering timing of Repeal, to also factor in the Great Irish Famine (as Ireland was part of the UK at this point and one of the three main budget items) and the pressure the Famine put on the UK public finances. Charles Read is good on this.

Ronan Lyons Christopher M. Meissner Douglas Irwin @ReddingEcon thanks Ronan Lyons. The Irish famine is critical here; so is Peel's commitment to low and stable food prices, which he thought economic growth was based on. Thus, whenever there was a downturn in the 1840s Peel reacted by cutting tariffs to get economic growth restarted.

Ronan Lyons Christopher M. Meissner Douglas Irwin @ReddingEcon See this explained in my chapter published in Martin Daunton's festschrift in 2019: cambridge.org/core/books/abs…

This is remarkable. Thanks for pointing it out Charles Read
