Remember in Squid Game where the contestants in mortal danger barely managed to reach safety through a popular vote And then later the dull banality of regular life drove them to voluntarily re-enter mortal danger Dunno what made me think of that

The leadership of Operation Warp Speed made a lot of personal sacrifices to deliver multiple safe and effective vaccines in record time. And they get almost no credit to this day.

It's ethical to cure your own cancer. It's ethical to cure your own cancer. It's ethical to cure your own cancer. There's no debate to be had.

I have different feelings on this and I think it's an interesting discussion. I don't like AI in interviews. I think it also gets to something a lot of people don't seem to understand about interviews with complaints such as "why am I reversing a linked list" etc.

The three best days of my life were my wedding and the births of my children The fourth best day of my life was when I was introduced as a cog neuro expert to 200 angry preschool parents and one stood up and said “oh yeah then what’s a Bonferroni correction” and I answered him

2. Your job is the strategy stuff and the dirty work stuff. All the cool stuff in the middle is for everyone else. You're not too senior to carry a pager or respond to outages, this keeps you in touch with how things are going.

PEPFAR has enjoyed bipartisan support for decades because cheaply saving the lives of millions of children is good and the right thing to do. If Congress decided to end it, I'd be devastated. But that's not even what's happening. Congress authorized it! Our democratic government

If Joe Biden had been plotting retribution against the agents who investigated his son, or the Clinton leaks, it would have been treated, entirely accurately, as one of the greatest political scandals in US history - creeping authoritarianism.

PEPFAR is one of the most popular, bipartisan US foreign aid programs. The State Department says it has saved 25million lives, but there isn't much public, independent verification. Last week I invited some friends to a weekend hackatjon to see if PEPFAR's numbers held up.

The field has spent too much time optimizing the ergonomics of procedural programming languages and far too little time optimizing the ergonomics of SQL

Nate Soares and I are publishing a traditional book: _If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All_. Coming in Sep 2025. You should probably read it! Given that, we'd like you to preorder it! Nowish!

I’ve been told recently that I’ve been softening my “brand” of AI skepticism. Pretty extreme misunderstanding IMO—I’ve stayed the same, and the models have improved. Still plenty to be skeptical of but that’s just common sense.
