It's finally done. Over 3 days of hand-plotting 173 years' worth of data. The end result is unbelievable. What an incredible dataset to look at.

We have a once-in-a-generation Gulf Coast snowstorm, despite the lack of a truly record-shattering cold air mass. What's up? Jeff Masters and I dig in. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/a-high…

Foot and a half deep snow drifts meets the Gulf of Mexico in Cameron Parish Louisiana. I can’t say I ever even imagined such a thing happening. Last time I was here at this beach was hours before Hurricane Laura devastated this coastline. #lawx #blizzard #snow

100 miles from Helene’s floods, 170 structures were flooded because Duke Energy had to open a spillway in a reservoir it manages. Lesson: homes in the floodplain immediately down river of an overflow spillway are a bad idea. 45 owners want buyouts. linkedin.com/posts/rob-youn…

The World Weather Attribution group studied the devastating L.A. wildfires, concluding that human-caused climate change led to a 35% increase in their probability. Climate change could not be blamed for the Santa Ana winds, though. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/climat…

After 1 month of data compilation and plotting, I have FINALLY mapped out all hurricane landfalls of the western North Atlantic! This is not the finished product, as I plan to include the entire Atlantic Ocean AND add intensity markers - but what a map to look at!

A few highlights from Jan. 2025: monthly Arctic sea ice extent was the 2nd-lowest in the 46-year satellite record; on Jan. 2, 3.7% of the surface of the Antarctic ice sheet melted--the most widespread melt event of any day in the 46-year satellite record. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/02/unexpe…

Earth's 1st major landfalling tropical cyclone of 2025 was Cyclone #Zelia in Western Australia. Fortunately, it hit a relatively sparsely populated area. Zelia was just the 19th Cat 4 or stronger cyclone to hit Australia since 1961. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/02/cat-4-…

uh ChatGPT just gave me the most sensible analysis of the climate crisis I've ever seen "The right-wing war on climate action is one of the most reckless betrayals of humanity in history. It’s driven by profit, ideological blindness, and a nihilistic disregard for the future."

NHC has released preliminary highlights of our forecast performance in the Atlantic basin for 2024's tropical cyclones. We are still in the process of finalizing analyses of the storms, and the full verification report will be available later this spring. nhc.noaa.gov/pdf/NHC_Verifi…

One other thing...around 2010, the idea that you could have 70% detection of rapid intensification at 24 hours (as NHC did last year) would have been unheard of. This is legitimately a major scientific achievement brought about by talented scientists and the support of programs

Losing this valuable aircraft data for atmospheric rivers is bad enough. If this happens with a major hurricane in the Gulf, that will be the ultimate "toddler touching the hot stove" moment, I think.

Need to sound the alarm on this one. As I understand it, this is from the "President's Budget Request", which often isn't really used that heavily by Congress (who actually controls funding). But this would essentially end all research and development within NOAA and NASA if
