Capturing descendants from the Bass Street Church for a documentary! The church's original location was at the foot of Fort Negley Park, a UNESCO Site of Memory as it was started by Black Civil War veterans.

Many of these objects used to enslave and by the enslaved were manufactured in New England and made these industrialists from the North wealthy. Another reminder that the whole nation profited from slavery, not only the South.

"By what standard of morality can the violence used by a slave to break his chains be considered the same as the violence of a slave master?" Remembering Walter Rodney, the revolutionary anti-imperialist, socialist, and Pan-Africanist, who was assassinated on this day in 1980.

After Jim Hutchinson was freed from slavery in 1865, the federal government gave him 40 acres in South Carolina. Soon after, that land was taken back. Learn about how the government’s ultimate betrayal fueled a racial wealth gap that persists today. motherjones.com/politics/2024/…

Did you know that #Nashville's Cameron School was built within a stone's throw from @FortNegely? That's no coincidence! @Pubhistorian & I will connect some of the early history of Cameron with the Black veterans of the Civil War- and you know I'll be talking about Bass Street!
