I was born the child of my parents. I never improved. I have quasi-official permission to haunt the Tennessee State Library and Archives after I die.

Today I got to interview our own Betsy Phillips about her re-discovery of Leander Woods, the formerly enslaved Civil War veteran who fought the KKK at Fort Negley Park, a UNESCO Site of Memory to protect Bass Street residents from white supremacist terror. We're standing right about where his home was in Napier.
Writes Betsy Phillips, the city held a dedication ceremony at Diane Nash Plaza Saturday — a good reminder that we should have a civil rights museum.

'Regular people who saw the chance to change things took it. And now they're just quietly going about their lives. How lucky we are to live among these unassuming heroes.' Betsy Phillips nashvillescene.com/news/pithinthe…
Rachel Louise Martin I’m 1/3 the way thru Hot, Hot Chicken. Thanks for the education, the stories, the history. Enjoying it. Well written, researched, with heart. 👏🏽
64 years ago, Diane Nash marched to the courthouse to demand desegregation. Today she was back to receive her flowers.
