Some of Peter Brook’s most upbeat paintings are those of his local Bradley Wood, a favourite location for Shep’s last walk of the day, ‘Training the Dog - About 1/4 to 4’ being a typically atmospheric example, with the warm orange light in the sky seen through the evening mist.

Wet all day today, like ‘Swaledale - Just a Passing Shower’, a clear case of Peter Brook’s fondness for understatement, wading with Shep through the puddles along the moorland road near the top of the Dale with only a patch of pink in the sky suggesting any change in the weather.

Peter Brook always undertook the occasional commission, such as ‘Sheila Halstead’s’ on Syke Lane in Ogden. The collector, with what looks like a Christmas tree, is seen in the window, under which for a change a cat takes pride of place. (Sold at Halifax Mill Auctioneers in 2022)

Peter Brook liked to identify literary connections with his work. In ‘The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep - Robert Frost’ he quotes the well known line from the American poet’s ‘Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening’, describing a journey on the night of the Winter Solstice.

In ‘Christmas in Reeth’, which Peter Brook often visited during the festive season, he portrays perfectly the feel of the popular Upper Swaledale village in the low light of this time of year, although the mood is lifted by a dash of red in the sky and the tree in the window.

‘Christmas Eve in Slaithwaite - With a Distracted Dog and a Baffled Sheep’ just has to be by Peter Brook, the anthropomorphic animals clearly confused as Santa makes his way to the front door, seemingly unaware that the chimney has just been swept in anticipation of his arrival.
