Today, on #VJDay80, we record the service of Charles Lightoller. On June 1, 1940, he sailed Sundowner to Dunkirk. With a capacity of 21 people, around 127-130 soldiers were boarded. On the return voyage, attacked by the Luftwaffe, he returned safely after 12 nerve-wracking hours.

On 18th August 1923, Olympic (#Titanic’s sister) left New York 40 minutes ahead of Leviathan. During the crossing, the 2 ships decided to “race.” Leviathan, being faster, caught up with Olympic, overtook her & arrived in Cherbourg on 23rd August. Olympic followed 14 hours later.
