Symbols (such as "cat") are important external tools used to communicate concepts between intelligent agents (humans, dolphins, eventually AGI, etc). They help clarify the fuzzy concepts (the many cats we have seen) that exist in the world.

Symbols are represented in each of our various nervous systems in slightly different ways as a manifold in a representational space (based on our own biology and experiences).

Danny Silver (@dannylsilver) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We attempt to create concise iconic symbols of these fuzzy manifold representations in order to share knowledge of the world and make sense of it between people.

Danny Silver (@dannylsilver) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Our brains do not reason with symbols. But they are great at mapping internal fuzzy (manifold) representations of concepts to external concise (iconic) representations we call symbols.

There are a hundred ways to write the character "f" - in this way it is a fuzzy concept. But all of them are recognizable to us as the symbol for the sixth letter of the alphabet.

The key to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is to develop systems that can both learn concepts from examples and develop and use symbols for these concepts to reason.

We will soon have a paper out that shows how Learning with symbols (LwS) makes learning to reason (L2R) much more effective.
