Proud PI as Emily finishes her 10-week Nottingham BBSRC DTP project. She developed methods for Helicobacter culture from raw meat & pig stomachs, used molecular techniques to detect them, gained bioinformatics & histo skills, networked. Hopefully just the start of her ECR journey🧫🥼

We are running a massive online open course on AMR databases starting end of the month. Its completely free, study at your own pace and its ~15 hours overall over the 3 weeks (although you can finish any time in a year). Please spread in your networks! …erences.wellcomeconnectingscience.org/event/antimicr…

Our latest paper on mmpR5 frameshifts mutations is out! Our modelling suggests that this regressor protein can still form its structure using alternative reading frames, which is important when predicting bedaquiline resistance in Mtb. journals.asm.org/doi/full/10.11…

New preprint out from Sam Dawson (PhD), Sara G ✌🏽 (MRes), Dr Fiona Newberry (post-doc), David Negus and Lesley Hoyles. COVID lockdown meant Sam needed to change the focus of his PhD for a while. This is the result. Isolated phages and MAGs --> 2x number of known weberviruses.

Congratulations to Stephen Thompson (PhD), OMOYEMI OJO (PhD), Lesley Hoyles and Jody Winter on their preprint combining transcriptomic (RNAseq) and phenotypic work to show the effects of menadione on Helicobacter pylori.

Just under a month left to apply for NTU PhD Studentships (deadline Feb 14th). Anyone interested in #AMR there's a project with my group to study the use of short interfering RNAs to reduce antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacterial species. tinyurl.com/56ym38a9

Fantastic sessions at Clifton Library today for Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity 🥳Our departments of NTU Department of Engineering and Dept of Biosciences, Nottingham Trent University along with PhD students ran fun experiments, including extracting DNA from strawberries, explaining how the brain works and why some animals can see in the dark! 👀

Congratulations to Conor Meehan and colleagues on their new publication showing some M. tuberculosis lineages may be less transmissible because of their longer initial non-infectious 'latent' periods. NTU Research NTUScienceTechnology sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
