🚨PBE's new analysis for National Literacy Trust and KPMG UK suggests around 106,000 more 5-year-olds could have been meeting the expected literacy standard each academic year with support. This has a total lifetime cost to society of around £830mn per cohort. /10 ow.ly/I8Sf50QHH0P

‘Universities have become hotbeds for mental health problems’ Notable that Resolution Foundation have found that the share of young full-time students with a common mental health disorder has increased at a far faster rate than that of working or out-of-work young people.

Lawrence Dunhill 1. It's really depressing that the focus is on 76%. This will inevitably focus effort on the 'quick wins' and discharged patients. Meanwhile there is deafening silence about the utterly miserable 12 hour (from time of arrival) stays.

"Yesterday’s Budget included some welcome focus on boosting the efficiency of public service delivery with the publication of a Public Sector Productivity Plan... But the more immediate reality is that it will make only a minor dent in the estimated £20 billion of implied cuts."

Physical and mental health services in the UK are facing a serious backlog. Read Daisy Alessandra Harmer's blog about how increased investment in the charity sector to improve capacity and effectiveness could positively impact mental health waiting lists. ow.ly/kAfh50RaxY3

The right policies could stop this. Increasing 4 hour access standard to 78% from 76% doesn’t work. Instead focus on 12 hour length of stay, it’s already in the contract. Not doing this puts elderly people’s lives at risk

New data shows some elderly patients waited 5 days + in A&E, "a national scandal" Adrian Boyle. In 2023, almost 100,000 elderly ppl in England wait 12 hrs + in A&E after decision for further care - age group 65+ sees 25-fold increase since 2019. 🌐 rcem.ac.uk/older-people-b…

Volunteering is not immune from labour market concerns such as infrastructure costs, cost of care, and long-term sickness. While VCSE orgs consider options such as bitesize/flexible volunteering, we need to see more investment in readily available core funding and infrastructure.

Great to see PBE research cited in the The Guardian, with Secretary of State Lisa Nandy MP reported to be considering our proposal for making philanthropy a central part of the conversation between wealth advisers and their clients, in order to boost giving #CivilSocietyCovenant
