As it’s #InternationalWomensDay here is a big reminder of why we need to talk about gender within creative teams in Musical Theatre and why we have launched Counterbalance
Our research last year proved there is a problem yet we’ve seen no action on this and had very few people reach out to us to support further research and initiatives to combat it (apart from Mercury Musical Developments who helped fund the research).
We know the theatres, producers and companies where this is a problem yet we have yet to see people being held accountable. So join us at Counterbalance to see us stir up a change together to make sure all genders are represented within writing teams equally 💖
Sign up to our Counterbalance mailing list by filling in this short form. There’s a section where you can state what support you are able to offer the cause to rebalance gender inequality in theatre - from support in kind to financial, or just putting your name down as an ally.
If you can’t make it but still want to support further development of women and nonbinary lead musicals check out Counterbalance

Indhu programmed a whole season of plays written by women. All of them were incredible. Excited to see what she does next, and hoping the approaching chapters at Kiln Theatre continue to champion female and non-binary voices 🥰
Huge congrats to Maz O'Connor for winning the Stiles and Drewe mentorship award - the first time it has been won by a female writer 👏🏼😎❤️
The Big Freelancers Report by Freelancers Make Theatre Work is a shocking read: - Av salary of theatre freelancers £22.900 - That’s 17.5% below national av salary - Av salary of male: £32,600 - Av salary of female: £20,400 - that’s 37% pay gap - 21-30 years experience? It’s 47.7% gap
