Complex, carefully constructed story-telling of a part-magnetic, part-destructive, life-spanning friendship in Samuel Adamson's Kiln Theatre, rippled with beautiful piano music from start to finish. Until 18th May. ETT

The Ballad of Hattie and James by Sam Adamson Kiln Theatre is a complex, sophisticated, time-jumping, queer romance that plays out between the mid-twentieth century & the mid-twenty-first. It’s full of music and love and anger and brutality. It’s really beautiful.

That was the most surreal night of my life. I’m over the moon and overwhelmed all at once and I think I’ll be that way for a while yet! ❤️

Thank you Olivier Awards for a wonderful evening. And congratulations to all the nominees, winners and performers 👏🏻

From something old at The Old Vic to something new at Kiln Theatre
The Ballad of Hattie and James.
I liked it very much: you have to admire storytellers: weaving together the complex elements of a story, revealing secrets, shifting back and forward in time. Great cast too 👏🏻

Sophie Thompson & Charles Edwards are never not sublime but the beautiful, unique, funny, delicate Kiln Theatre allows them to be all these things in spades. And such a perfect example of theatre. This couldn’t be done so powerfully any other way.

The Ballad of Hattie and James at the Kiln Theatre is a gorgeously written story of friendship, expertly performed by its leads. Sophie Thompson is so wonderfully magnetic on stage, and Charles Edwards has such an endearing subtlety to him. Really recommend!

🎹'They are both gay, so Samuel Adamson’s play which has a terrific cast is no traditional romcom but should be no less heart stopping...Inspired by the music of Kate Bush, Benjamin Britten, Tori Amos, Blur and more, Richard Twyman directs a story about an enduring duet.'
