In June 2013, Russian piano superstar Grigory Sokolov gave his extraordinarily rare approval for his recital to be filmed. His last performance filmed live took place more than 10 years earlier and it was one for the recordbooks!

Our beloved Luigi Boccherini b otd 1743! What a genius - his art is utterly different from Haydn's astonishing originality, Mozart's supreme natural power. Boccherini created his own perfect world, a haven of beauty, tenderness, lyricism, humour. Truly 'Music of the Angels'...

My Piano Concerto began with an email on 1st March 2021 during the pandemic: would I like to write a score for a movie about a concert pianist writing a piano concerto. As I looked at my blank concert diary, erased and masked, it seemed like a wonderful way to keep me busy. I'd

Martha Argerich on Bach’s Partita No. 2 in C Minor! 🎹🎇 To see Martha Argerich perform is an unparalleled experience. The so-called Lionness of the piano is known for her audacity, enthusiasm, and fiery temperament, qualities that breathed incredible caprice and poetry into

🎹🌟 Relive the beautiful beginning of Georgian piano star Khatia Buniatishvili's now impressive career. At the 2011 Verbier Festival the then 24-year-old pianist presented Rachmaninov's powerful and lyrical Piano Concerto No. 3 with disconcerting ease. 🎹🌟 bit.ly/3V75BaY

Franz Joseph Haydn b otd 1732! What a composer - such breathtaking originality, glorious imagination, emotional depth; a genius - unique. And I love his attitude to religious music: "When I think of my God, my heart dances within me for joy; and then my music has to dance, too."

[BIRTHDAY] On this day in 1732, Austrian composer Joseph Haydn was born. Let’s remember his musical legacy through one of his "London symphonies" the Symphony No. 93, one of the works the composer wrote when he discovered the English capital.

Please enjoy this rare opportunity to hear our 1784 Saxon #clavichord, its sublime and sensitive sound conjured by Benjamin Alard, Hatchlands Park . It is known that clavichord was JS Bach's preferred instrument, on account of its singing tone. youtu.be/Uzp84rAATYA

Two greats b otd: Brahms (1833), Tchaikovsky (1840). In their time, considered polar opposites: one a holy representative of German romantic classicism, the other a deeply Russian soul, immersed in drama. But today we just celebrate them for the glorious beauty they left us...

Wonderful afternoon at Hatchlands trying historical pianos. This country house has one of the most impressive collections of keyboard instruments in the world from 1580 onwards, especially those connected directly with composers. Alec was the most gracious, knowledgeable host.

Debussy b otd 1862! What a composer - such an extraordinary ear for beauty, a sensitivity to sound. He created his own language, with magically shimmering textures, sensuous mysteries; but was also - like all great composers - steeped in the music of the past. A complete master.
