Teachers who say things like "the kids just don't care" to justify the lack of engagement in our classrooms rile me up. Our job is to design instruction that is both engaging and effective. Student motivation is evidence of the efficacy of our choices as practitioners.

Learning loss: when children's ways of knowing are reduced to test scores, the learning they are doing is lost.

I ask students to annotate assigned readings with Hypothesis ➡️ 5 points for 5 annotations, either direct comments on the text or replies to peer comments. ➡️ Low stakes credit for work ➡️ Carlos C. Goller (he/him) and I showed it increases students' self-efficacy + sense of belonging.
