Teachers who say things like "the kids just don't care" to justify the lack of engagement in our classrooms rile me up. Our job is to design instruction that is both engaging and effective. Student motivation is evidence of the efficacy of our choices as practitioners.

I ask students to annotate assigned readings with Hypothesis ➡️ 5 points for 5 annotations, either direct comments on the text or replies to peer comments. ➡️ Low stakes credit for work ➡️ Carlos C. Goller (he/him) and I showed it increases students' self-efficacy + sense of belonging.

I rebranded my hybrid office hours as "Student Q&A hours" and moved them outside. I send weekly email reminders with the location, Zoom link, and examples of questions students can ask. Since making these changes, I consistently get 2+ students per session. 🎉 1/2

A bunch of apps promise to detect ChatGPT. That's great! But before you go uploading student assignments to them, here are a few questions to ask yourself...

📣Teachers, mark your calendars! Teacher's Appreciation Week is coming on May 8-12, 2023. But why limit appreciation to just a week? We're declaring May as Teacher's Appreciation Month! :tada: Submit an assignment and we'll treat you to coffee! ☕ hubs.li/Q01Nq6w60

"rather than respond by finding clever ways to use ChatGPT in the classroom, as if it’s inevitable, instructors should help students think critically and ethically about the new information infrastructures being built around us" insidehighered.com/opinion/views/…
