<Thread!> Supreme Court opinion announcements (available through @Oyez) contain a lot of hilarious, adorable, and interesting moments that don't make it into the U.S. Reports. Here are some of my favorites:

1. A small thread on technicalities and federal criminal appeals. Nothing original but just on my mind and I need to get it out of my system and move on to more pressing things.

Some #AppellateTwitter musings: last night I listened to Uzeugbunam case - it's an interesting matter about whether the Government can moot a constitutional claim by changing its policy. The plaintiffs say their nominal damages keep the case alive. 1/ supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments…

For YEARS I've thought that the Montana check to Black 59 Razor in Super Bowl XXIV was the 38 yard TD to Rice, because I've seen this clip so many times on the America's Game video on the '96 Packers.

The AHS says it usually has only a handful of older animals who have been at one of its shelters for two weeks or more without being adopted. But now, it has two dozen "Forget-Me-Nots," as they are called, spread out across the metro. bit.ly/3xEGrBq

“I absolutely feel like I don’t matter. I would even say I kinda feel like my attorney just wishes I would die so they could forget about the whole thing.” -MDL plaintiff A🧵on the 1st ever study of MDL plaintiffs & why it matters. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf… reuters.com/legal/litigati…

🎺D.C. Circuit Review-Reviewed Yale Journal on Regulation is back and better.🎺 The team includes Judge Thomas Griffith of the D.C. Circuit (ret.), who--as appropriate--can share an insider's account. And the rest of the team knows a fair bit about 'admin law' too. yalejreg.com/nc/d-c-circuit…

With First Monday upon us, you may be wondering . . . why does the Court’s new Term start on the first Monday in October? 🎃 (Why not, say, the second Tuesday in January?! ☃️) It wasn't always this way, so let’s take a trip down memory lane to find out . . . (mini ⚖️🧵, 1/x)

OK, I'm going to be somewhat livetweeting the Fifth Circuit oral argument in the #SB8 remand. To recap, what is going on? #SB8 is Texas's unusual private enforcement abortion ban. 1/

Everyone knows what happened in Babyn Yar, right? It is one of the singularly most horrific massacres in human history. The Nazis murdered nearly all of Kyiv's Jewry – nearly 34,000 people – one bullet at a time over a period of only 2 days in 1941. Thread.

It's remarkable, the leak of what appears to be an initial draft majority opinion. SCOTUS generally has kept its secrets and has kept confidential its internal processes and deliberations. But the Court does occasionally leak, and it has leaked before about Roe v. Wade. 1/x

The most recent episode of "Divided Argument," with William Baude and Dan Epps, has a fascinating discussion in light of Egbert about whether there is a constitutional floor of 4th Amendment remedies, and if so, what it is. A few thoughts. 🧵 dividedargument.com/episodes/smugl…

A "long-term science" story I like: In the 1700s, people living on the coast of the Baltic Sea noticed a curious thing... the sea level appeared to be inexplicably falling. Why? 1/9

This is a very good post on how the stakes are lower than people think. I think this has become sort of an "ego" issue for a lot of people. There's a level of offense at the very idea that conservative courts could scrutinize the social justice work of liberal institutions.

SCOTUS is about to hear argument in the 303 Creative case- you may have heard of it. It's a case involving a website designer who refuses to design websites for same sex weddings. What you probably don't know is it is a completely fake, cynically designed case. 1/
