In case you missed it at the weekend, there's a v. important case in Colchester where 1,000 new homes – and the apparent misuse of biodiversity net gain – are threatening a nightingale and all-round biodiversity hotspot (that's great for local people too). theguardian.com/environment/20…

Vegetables, all related to #cabbage. Important food all year round but especially those available in winter and early spring. Developed by encouraging different parts of the wild cabbage plant to become larger, more tasty, less bitter and softer. John Warren

Well done Brian Laney, one of our fabulous #BSBImembers, who is going the extra mile for Field Cow-wheat! Find out more about this declining hemi-parasitic plant, 1st recorded in UK in 1716, on its #PlantAtlas2020 page: plantatlas2020.org/atlas/2cd4p9h.… speciesrecoverytrust Kevin Walker

As you may know the algorithm here isn't so kind to small businesses nowadays. It would be fantastic if you could RT my tweet below/above in which I link to my January illustration workshop.Illness has slashed my income in the last year or so-it would help me so much. Thankyou x

A lot of work left to do to preserve and enhance the vital limestone grassland habitat at Ufton Fields for Warwickshire's only colony of Man Orchids. Will be there again next Tuesday 19th with Courtenay Dubock and Brian Laney help with raking appreciated!

Without a big chunk of basalt cliff having broken away, we'd never have suspected this modest clump of Sea Plantain had such a mighty taproot, stretching down half a metre of rock to find soil below #WildflowerHour

Big flaw with Labour's 1.5m new homes – house-builders can't be trusted to add biodiversity, as this important Wild Justice study reveals: theguardian.com/environment/20… Simple solution: funding for proper inspection/enforcement/penalties.

Plant life didn't fare much better in our research. Nearly 60% of wildflower grasslands on housing estates were damaged or sown incorrectly. This affects wildflowers, invertebrates, and inevitably other life like birds and mammals. 5/8

On the day of the new NPPF research from the University of Sheffield found that, in a sample of 42 new housing estates in five Local Planning Authorities, barely half of required mitigations for harm to the natural environment had actually been completed. wildjustice.org.uk/general/lost-n…

This misses the point entirely - trivialising nature extinction, climate change, increased flooding, & nature-deficit health & wellbeing issues, is unacceptable. This not 'newts' versus 'people', & such a comparison suggests extreme ignorance about the sustainability imperative!

Having completed my early winter Sussex Winter Bird Survey Sussex Ornithology entered into BirdTrack I opened my recent BTO News BTO to find a splendid Opinion piece on ‘botanical birding’ by BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland Louise (of which I am also a member).

While the weather is a bit damp and grey, we thought we'd have a wee look back to sunnier, warmer times - ie oysterplant survey season! 🌞 Based in Orkney, Shetland or on the North Coast? Find out how you can help us survey oysterplant this summer 👇
