Are you headed to the beach this weekend? If so, birds that are sitting on nests or have chicks running around need your help. Be sure to respect posted nesting sanctuaries, keep a safe distance from birds on the beach, keep dogs leashed, and enjoy the holiday! #ShareTheShore

It may be hot outside but that hasn’t stopped baby birds from hatching. You may begin to see juvenile cardinals at your bird feeders or baby turkeys following behind their parents. Remember to record bird breeding behavior observations in the ncbirdatlas portal in eBird.

In June, folks from NC Division of Parks and Recreation visited our Pine Island Sanctuary on the OBX to do a survey for spiders and moths. They counted 89 spider and 43 moth species! Arthropods like these are excellent sources of protein for growing chicks.

Check out this close-up of a Black-crowned Night Heron chick. Seen by day, these chunky herons seem dull and lethargic, with groups sitting hunched and motionless in trees near water. They become more active at dusk, flying out to foraging sites, looking for food.
