The status of teaching relative to research in American sociology is the single most emblematic example of the persistence of racism, classism, and sexism within the discipline. Don’t believe me? Answer these three questions in your head:

1) Who does most of the teaching? 2) Who does most of the actually effective teaching (the type that works, the type that is inspiring)? 3) How do we reward effective teaching?

You want to “make sociology better.” Start in your home base by joining the #ASA Teaching Section, attend its events, promote the work of your colleagues in that section, and

Do Not devalue publications on pedagogy as if they were worth less than publications on other topics (it’s equivalent to saying something like, “pubs on class are better than pubs on religion;” they’re just different topics). #ASA2023 #TeachingMatters #TeachSoc #soctwitter
