An amazing poster by Tamina Angel Jose from the Hynes lab (Alexander Hynes) on probiotics, prophages and how they might interact! For the full story go see poster #42 and ask about her amazing work on Lacticaseibacillus! CSM-SCM_2023 Dalhousie (Halifax) #CSM_SCM2023 #CSM2023

I don’t get this whole “correlation is not causation” thing. Every time I see a correlation, it seems to be causative.

The Hynes Lab Halloween! Even with a song and routine, we couldn't overthrough the reigning champion Li Lab in the costume contest, although we did claim victory in the Pumpkins!

Oh dear. it looks exactly like what I would scribble if I were asked to draw a JAK-STAT pathway in an exam today. Uncanny.

I am thrilled to share our work on a novel prophage-encoded phage defence from Karen Maxwell: Anti-phage defence through inhibition of virion assembly nature.com/articles/s4146…

Et de deux! Félix Croteau presenting the spoils of his PhD - Warhammer, Phage-Planters, and DNA. Oh, and a Thesis, I suppose. A masterful defence, a wonderful external Joshua Modell... and there goes the last of the lab's starting cohort. *sniff*.

If you've induced phages, you may have wondered if you can do the 'opposite' - block entry into lysogeny. You can, using protein synthesis inhibitors! Better still, this yields a potent synergy, functionally turning a temperate phage into a virulent one. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

The night before NoR. Last week at CSM 2024 Conference I met many fantastic researchers in this competition, in the same panel. And for 85% of us, tomorrow is going to suck. What's the better way forward?

Another double-podium finish for the Hynes Lab! The costume is a bit of an in joke/homage to Yingfu Li, while the pumpkins... well, I'd say they speak for themselves, although having "Bye Bye Bye" playing out of the speaker added a nice touch.

Dr. Rabia Fatima has "tPASsed". Too many feels. Thank you Siân Owen - sorry you couldn't make it for the presentation of the warhammer. I do get asked if I fear the graduates will use them against me... no! Not in public, anyway - they're all far too smart to get caught.

"Now that you've reviewed for us for free, would you also complete this short survey on the review process that will only take 12-15 minutes?"

Two surprises hiding in our latest! (1) How broadly effective Piperacillin is at synergizing with temperate phages. Maybe a reason PTZ is so effective? (2) Our inability to correlate any likely predictors of tPAS to actual synergy. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…
