Add in piloting, design, building, reliability coding, analysis, paper drafting... And that number balloons to easy 5 times that size (1500 hrs). Nearly a full work year fulltime for a single paper (assuming everything goes perfectly the first time you run the project, hahaha).

A typical NSF grant supports one postdoc for 3 years. Which is enough under this calculation for 2 or maybe 3 papers if you're lucky And no additional training is needed. I wish tenure/review committees understood this when they evaluated developmental psychology work.

Shout it from the rooftops! I consider myself lucky to be in this position - it brings me so much joy to spend my days working with infants and families. Sadly, the time that goes into it (especially as a phd student without helping hands) is not fully realised.💡

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. In 1938, Sir Nicholas Winton brought Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia to safety in the UK. Fifty years later, That’s Life reunited him with some of those children.

Ever wonder how physical sensations such as a racing heart give rise to fear? Using an adrenaline-like challenge during brain imaging we found that abnormal heart-brain communication contributes to increased fear in women with generalized anxiety disorder…ja.ma/3GmzcSH

Basic science and decades of failed policy made clear that addiction is a legitimate medical condition — a chronic relapsing brain disorder, to be precise — and that it’s often triggered by mental illness or social forces like poverty and trauma. nytimes.com/2022/06/24/opi…

So we're not supposed to describe applicants as "caring" and "compassionate" because those words are too feminized. Frankly, this is what's wrong with academia! Can we celebrate stereotypically female traits instead? I'd rather mentor a compassionate student than a driven jerk.

I was today-years-old when I learned a/b Henry Murray’s 3 year psychological torture experiments at Harvard in the 1960s, including over 200 hours of psychological abuse targeted at the guy who became the Unabomber I feel like this is worse than Phil Z’s shambolic prison?

I actually want to stop banging the Jews Don't Count drum at some point but hard to do when a racist myth about Jews is just...said, breezily, on one of the biggest podcasts in the world and no-one gives a fuck.

Very excited to share the first preprint from our lab! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… We develop a metric to score how well different tasks reliably separate individuals. We demonstrate this on a dataset of 250+ participants, and provide a simple tool for assessing old and new tasks. 🧵
