Added to arXiv a new version of "Efficient Synchronization of State-based CRDTs”. Includes proof of optimal deltas, removes redundancies during delta forwarding, benchmarks the new techniques while including links to a code/test repository arxiv.org/abs/1803.02750 LightKone Project

I'm going to start saying 'monopolization' of the internet instead of 'centralization' because it also incorporates the economic and design models that are harming us, not just the technical architecture which is often misleading.

This unfolding story deserves wider attention. ACM, the main academic society for computer science, has signed a despicable letter opposing open access. Computer scientists are shocked and figuring out how to protest. This is about the future of knowledge. x.com/search?q=ACM+o…

I am concerned that a lot of computer systems research is solving problems that only huge tech companies have (eg. fast datacenter networking, big data analytics systems), rather than working on technologies that empower individual users and the underprivileged.

I try not to succumb to the “everything sucks” mindset too much, but sometimes it would sure be nice if GUI software had evolved to be even just slightly compositional by design rather than the weird “desktop of hermetically sealed bubbles of functionality” we ended up with.

Maybe this is naïve–but I don't think *anyone* wants to think, at the end of their career, "gee, sure helped lots of people click on ads!"; or "sure did make cameras effective at recognizing folks!" Machine learning could be more– empowering, supporting, enabling. It should be.
