I’ve finally had replies from most of those I sent our public statement regarding the future of Welsh National Opera to last month. They’re pretty much as I would have expected, with Lesley Griffiths last to reply with this truly dismal response. She appears to be content to… 1/ 🧵

…wash her hands of Welsh National Opera by parroting lines seemingly fed to her by Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru | Arts Council of Wales. She’s still conflating two separate funding portfolios to reach a misleading statistic of 71% when #Opera & #Music are different portfolios - with good reason. More pertinent would… 2/

…be the fact that #Opera amounts to less than 15% of Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru | Arts Council of Wales’s total spend, despite being by far the most expensive art form to mount, especially given the extent of Welsh National Opera’s touring, & education & health projects. Does Lesley Griffiths not comprehend that… 3/

…without emergency funding WNO will go to a part-time model, with all the consequences that were outlined in our statement & during our protest on the steps of Welsh Parliament? Is that really what she & Eluned Morgan want for #Wales? 4/

…The response from Department for Culture, Media and Sport was predictably dismissive, parroting Arts Council England’s official line &showing little understanding. But as @lucyfrazermp is unlikely 2 be in post come July 4th I guess it matters little that she appears not to care about the future of #Opera in the UK. 5/

…And as for Thangam Debbonaire & Jo Stevens? Well, they certainly seem to understand more of the situation & make the right noises for the future. But I wonder if they realise that if their colleagues in Welsh Government continue to bury their heads in the sand it will be… 6/

…too late for Welsh National Opera? The clock is ticking & if the company is to remain full-time, an emergency injection of cash needs to be found urgently. There is enough uncertainty around both ACE & ACW’s behaviours & funding priorities to surely warrant an intervention by… 7/

…Welsh Government right now. We don’t have time to wait for the inquiries into the funding models which must surely follow. Please Thangam Debbonaire & Jo Stevens, I beg of you - speak to Lesley Griffiths & Eluned Morgan & convince them that WNO matters & should be saved. /End

From rugby league to Royal Opera, our cultural and sporting heritage runs through our towns, villages and cities and is one of our country’s greatest assets. It is an unbelievable privilege to take on the role of Secretary of State Department for Culture, Media and Sport . The hard work begins today.

Lisa Nandy MP Department for Culture, Media and Sport Many congratulations, Lisa Nandy MP. 👏🏻 I’m sure you realise that you inherit a sector in crisis, with #Opera on its knees & our great national companies being demolished as I write. Please can we speak asap to find a way to #SaveWNO? Welsh National Opera x.com/elizathertonso…
