Things you absolutely don’t need to launch: - a favicon - unit tests - a logo - an LLC - tax compliance - VAT handling - a merchant of record - terms and conditions - a privacy policy - a copyright notice - a trademark - commit messages - code reviews - code comments - a

This tweet is a joke but .... I do wonder how much of the programming complexity that we have to deal with on a day-to-day basis is really just seniors protecting their careers from being replaced by juniors!

Lots of tweets about how teenage mental health has declined since everyone had a smartphone. Why has everyone suddenly realised this now though? And started to tweet about it? I wonder if it's drumming up support for the TikTok ban they might want to do?

In 2009, PG wrote about programmers having fewer meetings "I wouldn't be surprised if there start to be more companies like us." paulgraham.com/makersschedule… Instead we got Scrum! More meetings than ever before.

I wrote the following over a few weekends (needed due to changing jobs!) It’s called “When will I run out of money?”, nerdy, privacy-respecting, and is available for free whenwillirunoutofmoney.com Hope it’s as useful to someone as it was to me. Let me know if you find it confusing!

you break your arm you ask the doctor when it’ll heal “don’t be ridiculous that can’t be measured in time” oh sorry “it will take 8 points to heal” uh what does that mean? “doesn’t matter it’s not accurate anyway” —- engineers are so far up their own butt sometimes

This is terrible advice. "If you complete the project early, you're still getting paid the same amount". And also if you complete the project late. And what % of software projects, in your experience, get delivered early, vs. delivered late.

I wrote, "Scrum is a cancer," and the Internet had thoughts about it. After 3,400 replies, I learned a few things: First, the most common jobs among the people who told me I was wrong were "Agile Coach" and "Scrum Master." They feel very strongly in favor of Scrum, but I'm not

Still think the most British thing about the company I work for is that there's a bot and you can optionally add "please" (which is ignored) to the commands. Because presumably people couldn't handle asking the bot to do things without being polite.

Saw a YouTube ad of a real video of Elon Musk, dubbed to say he'd created a new trading scheme where an investment of €250 would yield €5,700 per day, starting from the first day. Obviously a scam. Obviously fraudulently using Elon Musk 's image. Fine, according to YouTube.

Been doing Go for six months. Rite of passage today. Spent quarter of an hour debugging why my "for" loop didn't work as I expected. I'd taken a pointer to the loop variable. (Looking forward to that getting improved in a future version.)

PSA/TIL: Always explicitly name your DB constraints. The default name algorithm might change in a future DB version, and then your migrated prod names != newly created DB in Docker with your current version. Happened with FK names in PostgreSQL 12.

In Bali, me and my friends would all go into an idle state without realizing it You just sit in cafes and restaurants (most don't have AC there) and doing nothing, just hanging around Then you'd enter an AC'd cafe (few), and after half an hour you'd wake up from standby mode

This MAY be very farfetched but hold my sparkling water: - Global temperatures started rising in ~1950 - US started installing ACs in ~1950 - 90% of US homes have AC - EU never did: only 19% of EU homes have AC (!) - Only 16% of the top EU companies were founded after 1950 -

Europe's governments made energy expensive on purpose to stop you from using it! Europe is anti-energy right now and taxes it heavily causing prices to be more than double than in the US: - US: $0.16 per kWh - EU avg: $0.31 per kWh (2x) - Germany: $0.44 per kWh (2.75x) Energy
