National Museums Scotland cares for approximately 4500 objects from South and Central America, however much of the collection remains under researched. Today is the first step in longer programmed work to better understand these collections & make them more accessible to their stakeholders

Tori Adams are hosting Lucas Maciel from the University of São Paulo, Paolo Fortis from the University of Durham & Jamie Forde from the University of Edinburgh to look at some of these collections

Where possible we will share some of the objects looked at today including this Peruvian feather cloak which may be of interest to Rosa Dyer

Mola from Panama, detailed hand stitched textile panels, often forming part of blouses or dresses. The knowledge of how to make these panels is passed down through generations of women.

This Mapuche trapelacucha is a later version which features a pin to attach it to the clothing of the wearer. Earlier examples were attached to metal collars worn around the neck. Often the silver used for these came from melted down or beaten silver coins.

We ended the day looking at Nasca textile fragments, considering recurring iconography, weaving techniques and collecting histories.
