I want to push back on this term "invisible disabilities" because so much of the time it is actually just a nondisabled person's failure to "perceive" someone's disability. It is just poor bodymind literacy coupled with the assumption that nondisability is the norm.

My #1 advice to new graduate students from communities had have historically been excluded from academia: the people studying your lived experiences will not automatically be your ‘allies’ Take your time, get to know their politics before giving them your trust.

10/10 would recommend Ken as an advisor! :D 1. You'll collaborate with awesome people🤸🏿‍♀️🤝🤸🏽‍♂️ 2. You'll work on meaningful challenges 💪⚒️ 3. You'll practice saying nice things to your brain ❇️🐨 (I'm obviously a huge fan 🤓)

I think about this a lot. Some people don't have an "intense" or atypical life story to "wow" college admissions. I feel like this creates anxiety for BIPOC & women who feel they won't stand a chance because they dont have a homeless to Harvard or early-life experience to share.

It's PhD application season! I think a real problem with this process is that applicants w/o mentors don't know the non-obvious secrets/tips. Here's the whole playlist of a series of videos that I made in hopes of getting relevant info out there. youtube.com/playlist?list=… #phdchat

😭Thank you so much Ken! I learned so much working with you last Fall. I still use those methods in my current lab and have shared those practices with undergrads. It can be hard figuring out how to design HCI studies and you've made it less intimidating for so many of us.

Considering a CS/HCI PhD this year? I've made a list of open research positions to browse by subject area! 👇 andrewkuz.net/hci-opportunit… If you/peers are hiring students, please DM me the recruitment tweet and I'll add. I'd love to make sure students can discover your lab in time!

This internship opened a lot of doors for me. I had amazing mentors: Martez Mott & Meredith Ringel Morris. Also, only 1 of my reference letters came from someone I did research with. If you feel under qualified, apply anyway. BIPOC applicants, you can do it!

Additionally, paying for expertise does NOT mean: 1. converting Black people (often women) with a PhD in a STEM field into your DEI dean/director. 2. hiring 1 person to do ALL the DEI work for the entire college/department. There literally needs to be a team.

I love this so much. I wonder how enjoyable assistive technology and accommodations could be if people designed for sensory joy instead of avoiding aversions.
