(Operation Market Garden.) 0845 19 September: 30 Corps contacts 82 Airborne Division at Nijmegen, the Waal Bridge is firmly in German hands. 1730 20 September: Waal Bridge is finally captured. Morning 21 September: Frost at the Rhine Bridge in Arnhem, surrenders.

Looking decidedly the worse for wear, this is a Handley Page Halifax Met 6, the last operational variant of the type. Flt Lt Finch carried out the last-ever sortie by an RAF Halifax when he ferried the final Met.6 to 48 Maintenance Unit at Hawarden, near Chester, in March 1952.
