The University of Washington conducted a search for a professor focused on diversity.

A white woman was the search committee's first choice.

A diversity committee member objected on the grounds of race.

They then re-ranked the candidates.

Zimbabwe was Africa’s breadbasket until they ran out the white farmers in an asinine attempt to right historical wrongs, then compounded the error but selling China its best farmlands, who planted tobacco and other products to send back to China.

'Modern ways of speaking no longer enable us to 'take a word and derive the world from it': on the contrary, they veil the world, since they convey no lived response to it. They are mere counters in a game of cliché designed to fill up the silence' TS Eliot as Conservative Mentor

LA traffic violence reached a record high in 2023. More people were killed in car crashes than homicide.

Meanwhile, Americans have a perverse belief that mass casualties are inevitable.

A century ago, Americans spent only 1-2% of their income on transportation.

Today, as Jerome Segal says, the average American family works from January 1 until March 14 just to pay for transportation: “No society in history has worked so much just to be able to get around.”

The Egyptian House in Penzance, Cornwall, was built between 1834 and 1837 to house the mineral collection of dealer John Lavin.

The choice of the Egyptian style for a mineral shop may seem odd, but the building was inspired by the now-lost Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly, London.

Design Adjustments to slow cars towards that 30mph speed would be yellow posts in the middle yellow & white posts in the bike lane buffer.

Vertical Physical objects slow drivers down bc they have to pay attention to not drift & hit one.

Believe it or not this is a new street in rural Wiltshire. No rule of economics or physics prevents us creating beautiful new places. We do it to ourselves.

PS: most of the windows in this photo would fail the perverse new Part O Building Regulations in England

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before:

When Athens’ Ermou Street went car-free in 1997, there were widespread protests from shopkeepers and taxi drivers.

Today it is a thriving destination, as the center of trade in the city, and one of the busiest shopping streets in Europe.

The central block is early C18, but the rest is C20, by the most famous English architect of the day, Edwin Lutyens. I am struck by how self-effacing Lutyens was, modestly emulating style of the existing building so that it looks as though it might have been built in one go.

Excellent by Gray Connolly: 'If ever a myth was exploded by recent events, it is that education is a shield against prejudice ... Hence the appalling state of our campuses, where the harassment and intimidation of Jewish students and staff is now rife.'
