#OtD 6 Nov 1922 79 coal miners were killed in an explosion in Pennsylvania. Despite the mine being rated gaseous and miners being burned by gas at least 4 times, the mine was rated non-gaseous at the insistence of new mine operators

San Antonio has often been the center of Mexican American culture & activism. Today, I joined Mexican American Civil Rights Institute (MACRI), Ron Nirenberg, Councilwoman Teri Castillo & others to push for the designation of Emma Tenayuca Memorial Way on Cevallos St from I-35 to Probandt to honor her life as a labor leader.

I was proud to join Councilwoman Teri Castillo, Joaquin Castro, Mexican American Civil Rights Institute (MACRI), and Emma Tenayuca's family to announce a Council Consideration Request that honors Emma's legacy. The designation of Emma Tenayuca Memorial Way will be the first of many commemorations of San Antonio's heritage.

Born #OTD in 1916, Emma Tenayuca was a trailblazing labor rights leader in Texas and a leader of the Workers Alliance of America. She organized the largest ever strike in San Antonio with the Pecan Shellers’ Strike of 1938 to protest low wages and unhealthy working conditions.
