Study (N=200 courses) tested 3 interventions to reduce gender bias in student evals, but none were effective. "Women who were tough graders or taught large classes received more criticism than men with the same grading style or class size." kim elsesser, PhD forbes.com/sites/kimelses…

There's a thing some journal systems do, designed to reduce late reviews, where they send a reminder at 7 & 3 days before due date asking you to 'expedite' the review and I find it irrationally irritating. If you wanted it 3 days ago, that's when you should have set the deadline!

It's timely to highlight the life & work of computer scientist Lynn Conway. In the late 1960s, she transitioned from male to female and was sacked by IBM as a result. For some years, she went underground and, for the rest of her career, worked as a woman - herstory unknown.

In the late 1970s, working (in her words) in 'stealth mode' as a woman, Lynn developed very large scale integration (VLSI) of computer components, a key breakthrough in computer science, which enabled the modern computer and ultimately put smartphones in everyone's pocket.

To all conference attendees everywhere, please never decline a mic. The loudness of a voice is not the only thing that makes it intelligible and so some of us cannot hear you regardless of how well you project. This is my 11th year of tweeting this plea. #POD24

Labour's family farm tax problem should be really easy to fix, and they could probably even do it in a revenue neutral way - eg instead of 20% above £1m go to 30% above £5 million. They've got it wrong, and if you're going to have to do a U-turn then best to get on with it.

TRAVEL WARNING: the london commuter girlies are TODAY switching from lighter autumn jacket to dark wool winter coat, saying "we should've worn this yesterday". BE PREPARED: any colour of coat is ok as long as your boots match and you have a big checkered scarf and maybe a fringe

So, I've just spent a bit of time looking into the debate on IHT and farming. I... got a shock. First, a note: I have a friend who runs a family farm. In his view, the whole thing is a something and nothing. 🧵

To give a sense of comparison? Jeremy Clarkson purchased a whopping 400 hectares (20 times the average farm size) back in 2008. So whatever you do, don't think he's the average farmer; he really isn't. /7

In the last year alone, 400,000 hectares of agricultural land have been taken out of use for farming, as the wealthiest purchase land. Doing so allows them to avoid IHT. /9

Approx 29k resident doctors applied for 9k training posts this year. They're not "choosing" to forgo specialist training, GMC, they're being forced out of it by the decision to artificially suppress numbers of doctor training posts, even though we're so short of consultants.
