If this turns out to be true, I’ll be incredibly disappointed in UVA admin - a group of leaders I’ve long held in high regard. Enforcing a policy = reasonable. Changing a policy so you can enforce it with police action hours later = terrible.

Cops at UVA are attacking and arresting students for protesting genocide. A much harsher response here than the fascist hate rally in Charlottesville got.

None of these folks showed up when I lived on campus and white supremacists with tikki torches yelling “Jews will not replace us” marched through campus as I hid my three kids.

University of Virginia student journalists are covering police breaking up another (at least the 4th?) Virginia student encampment protesting Israel’s killing of civilians and US support of the Israeli government

Police have outlined chargers for protestors within the encampment, warning them that “reasonable force” will be used to remove them if they do not disperse.

See his thread for that shocking video.😢 Instead, now showing up in militarized gear for what’s being widely reported as bunch of students in tents, seemingly for violating an administrative rule just changed so that they could be found in violation of it. 📷 @oliviacpaschal

The UVA student encampment was so quiet this week that I didn't even know there was one until mid-week. Hoped it wouldn't turn into something dangerous for them due to police presence like at other institutions, especially with finals starting up. That hope has died.

When Virginia politicians look at what’s happening with these protests—and they’d damn well better look—they should consider which side aligns with fascism, and which side aligns with freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.

MOMENTS AGO: Police in riot gear cleared the encampment using force. Upwards of a dozen protestors have been detained. Chemical irritants have been used. Large crowd remains, and is being pushed back to University Ave.

Delegate Katrina Callsen Activate Virginia People have a right to protest. The protests at UVa have been peaceful. I’m not sure what change provoked this sort of response by the police. Violence is unnecessary. I will be interested in knowing whether the change in tactics was decided in Charlottesville or Richmond.

Correction: Virginia state police says “NO law enforcement in Virginia have or deploy tear gas, by its defined chemical composition.” The officers used OC spray at the protest which is also known as “Pepper spray.”

UVA says “At this time, 25 individuals have been arrested for trespassing and taken to Albemarle County Regional Jail. We are still waiting for confirmation of how many arrested individuals are affiliated with UVA.” 29News - Charlottesville
