BAD PLAYERS don’t take much seriously. AVERAGE PLAYERS take games seriously. GOOD PLAYERS take practice & games seriously. GREAT PLAYERS take academics, nutrition, warm-ups, ind. work, weight room, conditioning, film, practice & games seriously. ~ Jon Beck

Parents - If you want to see your child have a better chance for more playing time, then please focus more on teaching them the soft skills (handling adversity, humility, respect, work ethic, unselfishness).

Teach kids how to lose. Losing isn’t quitting, pouting, blaming or tantrums. It isn’t “feel-good” trophies either. Losing means lessons to learn, work to do, & the courage to come back tomorrow stronger & better. You can’t be a great winner until you’ve truly learned how to lose.

Parents: That "showcase event" looks like opportunity, but it's not. Kids lose sleep, travel far, are put through rote repetition & play bad ball in front of no one. These events profit off hope. True exposure comes from real development, trusted competition, not hype cash grabs.

Playing time isn’t a gift; it’s a receipt.   Receipts that get printed at practice. If you haven’t made your practice time count, don’t try to count your playing time.

🚗Imagine if we taught driving only with cones in an empty car park. Would that prepare anyone for the real road? 🏀Basketball is the same. The game is unpredictable. Just like driving, players adapt to space, speed, and the decisions of others. Skills do not transfer through

PLAYERS: Verbal leadership doesn't always have to be rah-rah. If you can talk, then you can be a verbal leader. Any player can ENCOURAGE, INFORM, or REMIND their teammates of the standards, expectations, and goals.

Encourage your children to communicate directly with their coach. It’s a skill they will need for a lifetime, so help them develop it now. They need to learn that parents can’t fight their battles for them. -Jon Beck

Player development isn’t isolation drills or fake ‘muscle memory.’ It means designing chaotic, game-like environments where players explore, adapt & solve problems. Coaches should guide with constraints, not scripts—master the environment, not one-size-fits-all technique. Own it!

Jon Beck (@coachjonbeck) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Coaches keep posting “from drills to game application” but there’s no such thing. If your drill has zero representativeness, it doesn’t transfer. On-air drills look nice, but players don’t learn decisions, perception, or timing. Real skill grows in the game, not in scripted reps.

How come parents never tell their kid’s math teacher how to teach calculus but they think as parents they have the right to tell a coach how much playing time and with whom and when their kid should play. ~ via Coach Morgan Randall 🧢

Coaches do not choose your playing time - your choices do. Playing time isn’t politics. It’s proof. It's proof of your habits, your work ethic, and your sacrifices. There's a price to pay before you earn the right to play.
