If a player doesn’t play hard all the time, no skill they bring to the table can offset that. Playing hard is a prerequisite to playing. Period. Nobody succeeds by making half an effort. Make sure your players understand that laziness is unacceptable. Competing to WIN is a skill!

The person is always more important than the player. Developing better people should be your #1 commitment. Sports have a very short life span. Development, relationships & education last forever. Seeing kids learn, grow, develop & become should be what all coaches strive for!

Many people seem apathetic, indifferent or uninspired. They’re not. They’re just simply depleted, drained or spent. They’re living a very different life, perhaps in survival/comfort mode, giving the bare minimum because it’s all they have left. Understand & know the difference!

Resilience is a characteristic many people don’t have. You can be dedicated & passionate about something, but if you tend to get frustrated & walk away, you won’t get far. Success is based in resilience. Don’t give up on a situation & ultimately you’ll end up someplace you love!

Huge majority of HS athletes won’t play at the next level. The HS athletic experience should be built around what’s best for all athletes, not the few who are lucky enough to continue to play. Build your program to include all of your kids. HS sports should be about HS athletes!

Culture is viewed in many ways, but one thing you can be sure of: Culture is dynamic & encompasses everything & everyone inside of a group, team, school, job, family, etc. And whatever happens, whether individually or collectively, good or bad, those actions impact it every day!

Necessary in youth sports:

Let them play
Let them fail
Coach positively
Teach them to give/love/be unselfish
Let them play as many sports as they want

Unnecessary:

Over-coaching/analyzing
Expecting adult knowledge from a child
Showing disappointment in them
Constant criticism
