“Someone I know has never observed that, therefore it does not exist, and I’m not willing to engage in a debate about it.”

Absolutely love the intense, mutual, barely concealed "I fucking hate you" energy of this photo. President Harry S. Truman and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Commander-in-Chief UN Command & US Commander-in-Chief, Far East, Wake Island, 15 October 1950.

As the U.S. Army celebrates its 250th birthday, we can’t even say what that date would be for the British Army 🇬🇧. Charles II issued first Royal Warrants on 26 January 1661, but the Assize of Arms 1181 established a duty of military service and the fyrd goes back to about AD 605.

“I’ve read every single word of her report and I’m going to accept her recommendation. I think that’s the right thing to do.” If only we know who it was who’d been arguing the exact opposite of “the right thing to do!” Just say you got it wrong, man. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

So obviously the right political, diplomatic, strategic and moral decision to make. Thatcher’s instincts were absolutely sound on the issue.

As far as I can see, the only significant element of Spain’s claim to Gibraltar is “territorial integrity”, which, surely, would entitle them to Portugal as well (but please don’t mention Ceuta or Melilla; and the Canary Islands are because reasons).

The depressing thing about this appalling saga at BBC News عربي is that I genuinely can’t decide if they had some really bad people peddling an antisemitic narrative or people who looked at the content with what they believed was fairness and saw no problems. telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/06/1…

Yesterday’s parade in Washington DC honoured the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary but it was the Commander-in-Chief’s 79th birthday too and MAGA ruthlessly conflates them. In The i Paper: is Trump’s preening at its high water mark? Context matters. inews.co.uk/opinion/trumps…

It is (only!) 10 years since Donald Trump announced he would seek the GOP nomination for president. That was another world. In my City A.M. I note tomorrow’s 95th anniversary of the Smoot-Hawley Act and argue that Trump exists in his own reality, not ours. cityam.com/what-does-10-y…

It is 302 years since Adam Smith was baptised (5 June Old Style) in Kirkcaldy. The Wealth of Nations changed the world, as I set out in City A.M., and Smith’s observations on free trade echo across the centuries. cityam.com/happy-birthday…

I get that WHSmith has retained the rights to its brand and that Modella has to call its newly acquired shops something, but this seems strikingly shit and derivative, as well as wholly inauthentic. Rory Sutherland Roger L. Martin Martin Newman - Consumer Champion will be better judges than I.

Linda McMahon, US Secretary of Education, believes “Universities should continue to be able to do research as long as they’re abiding by the laws and are in sync, I think, with the administration and what the administration is trying to accomplish”. Well, she’s half-right.
