REMEMBRANCE | ARRAS, FRANCE, 1917 Yesterday morning at dawn we remembered the soldiers and officiers who fought in the Battle of Arras. The battle took over 250,000 casualties, sometimes with over 4,000 deaths per day. We will remember them: lest we forget.

Last Friday I attending dinner with seven Normandy veterans in anticipation of the 80th commemorations of D Day.

D-DAY 80 Last night I was a guest soloist at a concert in Leiden’s City Hall to raise funds for the Band of Liberation’s tour in Normandy. I spoke about the role of music in remembrance: how it has the capacity to help people confront pain and heal.

D-DAY 81 • NORMANDY I’m in Normandy to sing nine commemorations for British, Canadian, French, and US veterans and casualties. So many mixed feelings: the joy of seeing friends, sadness about those who can’t return, cringing at jingoism and feeling moved by gratitude for peace.

William Joseph Cliffe of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry is buried in Vauville, France. This afternoon we held a ceremony at his grave, on which is written: "In My Heart He Will Always Live, The Best Of Sons That God Could Give. Mother" He was 20 when he died.

Singing at Colleville Montgomery this morning in the presence of five Second World War veterans. They have lived with the scars of war for over eighty years, and they continue to serve by reminding us of the vulnerability of peace.

D-DAY 81 • BAYEUX CATHEDRAL Bring the ceremony to a close, with Tosh MacDonald and Jedburgh Pipe Band. A really beautiful ecumenical service.
