It was brilliant to be a part of such an iconic and moving moment. Looking out across Gold beach thinking about its history was sobering to say the least. Well done for having the idea and seeing it through.

On D-Day John was a Sub-Lieutenant on HMS Serapis - a minesweeper warship that defended Normandy against enemy ships and aircraft for over two weeks.

As the 1,475 'giants' arrive in Normandy today, here's how the journey started, with a special farewell from Churchill's birthplace, Blenheim Palace.

The Memorial will host the Standing with Giants installation through spring-summer 2024.
