Timely #ContactTracing does matter fighting #COVID19. In a new paper (➡️ bit.ly/394Ebuo) we study a bizarre #Excel error in England that caused 16k cases to NOT be contact traced. We econometrically can link this blunder to ~ 120k new cases & 1.5k deaths...🧵⬇️1/N

Congratulations Guido Imbens on winning the Nobel Prize in Economics! An extremely well-deserved win (with David Card and Josh Angrist) for causal inference which has changed the direction of the entire field of economics and almost all of its subfields. Go Stanford University Econ!

“They want equal opportunities for everyone else’s children, extra for their own” Young (1958) wrote in his seminal work on meritocracy. My JMP “Unleveling the playing field? Experimental evidence on parents’ willingness to give their children an advantage”, puts it to the test!

Add that to the research on how much test scores are affected by air conditioning on hot days, and it is pretty clear that good HVAC systems will often pay for themselves in schools, offices, and anywhere else thinking matters. x.com/emollick/statu…

Is this patient having a heart attack? After 10+ years in the ER, it’s still an agonizing question for me I turned the angst into a long paper with 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 in QJE—doi.org/10.1093/qje/qj… Tl;dr—machine learning can have *huge* benefit, and help fix docs' errors 🧵

Every now & then I come across a beautiful paper that makes me answer the question "Is this economics?" with an emphatic YES. The debutante season was disrupted in 1861-63 by Queen Victoria's mourning. This led to less assortative matching & reduced aristocratic power.
