On Oct 25, 1921, the WWI Unknown Soldier departed from Le Havre, France, aboard the USS Olympia. Amidst a series of ceremonies, French Minister of Pensions André Maginot presented the Unknown with France’s highest decoration, the Cross of the Legion of Honor.

Prior to the burial of the WWI Unknown Soldier in 1921, the casket lay in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda from Nov 9-11. President Harding & government leaders honored his arrival on Nov 9. Then on Nov 10, over 90,000 members of the public paid their respects to the Unknown.
