Because they derive from ‘will’ and ‘shall’, the Ls in WOULD and SHOULD were once pronounced, and only fell silent in the 16-1700s. Because COULD comes from ‘can’, its L isn’t original and was deliberately added in the 1400s to make all three words appear similar.
