I think this would be the final straw for me. I can't be a member of a party that wants to add the UK to either list of countries here below - it's obscenely oppressive to ban VPNs, we're supposed to believe in freedom of expression and privacy - I'd resign my membership

Buried deep in the UK Online safety act section 122 (2)(a)(iii) is the legislation giving Ofcom the power to do exactly the same as Ireland and use client-side scanning! They want your private messages, directly from your phone, before you even send them …of course they do 🔥

The UK's Science, Innovation & Technology Minister flunked secondary school, had to apply three times to get accepted on an "international development and environmental studies" course at a third rate university, scored a doctorate in "community development", and his work

i am sorry for dystopiaposting today but all of this stuff is coming out at once this is one of the most insane nanny state invasions of privacy i have ever seen and the fact it’s automated on a large scale means a lot of false positives and negatives are going to be inevitable

I thought surely UK, a modern Western liberal democracy, would not be arresting 30 citizens per day for speech crimes – it must be a mistake. Alas, in 2023, 12,183 (~33/day!) arrests were made. Only 2.5% of these are formally charged, which suggests the goal is intimidation.

These people are dreadful. The law imposes fines of up to 10% of a company's global turnover, as well as criminal liability for individual executives. Of course they're going to be risk averse when hit with new regulations like this. The Government and Ofcom are drunk on power.

I was hoping that the infighting amongst conservatives wouldn’t last given the tragedy surrounding Charlie and his family (and America honestly) but it looks like that was naive. I was hoping we could band together and fight against actual evil. I suppose this is how evil works

Maybe a very prosaic observation, but I've been reflecting on just how much the pandemic changed the world in ways that are completely unrelated to the pandemic itself. I think I've underestimated it 'till now. In a recent interview, I was struck by the comment that so many of

you have to admire how Peter Thiel has been complaining about woke since like 1980 but now that it's no longer socially costly and his side is actually winning he's gone totally mute on the matter... true contrarian patriot in it simply for the love of the game
