This is starting to follow the US trend written about in Nobel economist Angus Deaton’s “deaths of despair”. But beware the notion that this is just a consequence of poverty/austerity. Deaton calls these “false trails”. They do not correlate. Need to look more at work and family.

The UC debt issue comes up more than the generosity of universal credit in my work. If money’s tight the automatic removal of 25% can be a tipping point. Bringing the rate right down (8-10%?) is simple to do and might even raise money in time with more manageable repayments.

This is as ever very good from Matthew Syed. And on thinking ‘how’ to be courteous it reminds me of a CS Lewis passage. It is faith based but widely applicable and leaves us with no option other than to be not just courteous, but in awe of each other.

Feels like a day to retweet this thread. Many good people in Parliament doing good things every day for every party. We should value them more. #DavidAmess

It's been 2 years since the Timpson Review into school exclusions was published. Last month MPs debated what has happened since then and what more there is to do. Here is the CSJ's @Ollie_Rackham with a summary of that debate 👇👇 centreforsocialjustice.org.uk/newsroom/timps…

Brilliant news. A 55% taper rate was where The Centre for Social Justice pitched its tent when UC was just a theory in 2009. This is a big boost for low earners at a really important moment.

Frank Field is the only politician I ever booed… When I was 18 he came to my sixth form in Birkenhead for a 1997 election hustings, touting changes that risked the future of the school. He brilliantly won over the room. And the school is still there too. thetimes.co.uk/article/frank-…

Hull v St Helens on C4 right now. If you want to understand the meaning of belonging, community, and the importance of our social ties and history this is an absolute master class. Not just a token silence. Really genuinely moving. #jw13

"As a teenager, he gave me the most precious thing that anyone could, time.” Struck by how many team mates’ tributes on here today are about the man as much as the phenomenal player. A man with eulogy virtues as well as resume ones. Too soon. Very sad. bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-le…

Forwards win matches, backs decide the margin. They’ve spent several years building the two best packs in the world. It ain’t always pretty but they deserve it. I hope it does something for the nation too.

Seeing Miriam Cates get lots of stick for this but neither conservative nor Labour plans for childcare seem to acknowledge infant attachment and the potential long term impact of these policies on future workforce. Would love to see this risk assessment…?

What’s that you say? The people want an Octogenarian v the host of the Apprentice to run off for PM…? Feels familiar….

I keep hearing about the decline in young people’s mental health. In economic inactivity, in education, in health and so on… How low does this chart need to go before we start talking about it?
