Thoughts (advice) about short talks at scientific meetings. 1 - less is more - do not put in as much as possible. 2 - Getting your enthusiasm across is really important 3 - Convince all that your question is really good, and provide an answer! That’s all.

Congratulations to soon to be Dr. Evan Johnson - he has turned in his signed thesis! Great piece of work that has already produced papers in top journals!

Coming back to US from ESA- immigration officer at next booth: did you say Davis? Are you an Aggie? Me:yes. Officer: my uncle was dean of engineering. I did know his uncle. Yes, immigration officers can be people too. Made my day.

I was really impressed at CSEE-ESA 2022 how well everyone was wearing a properly fitting N95 mask. Made me much more comfortable.

The prolonged & intense heatwave across CA/NV that is already starting to build will peak over Labor Day weekend. Numerous daily record high temperatures (and some monthly Sep records) are likely; if ECMWF ensemble is right, even a few all-time records could fall (!). #CAwx

The scariest part of this article is the plot of average summertime highs which is basically a straight line for roughly the past 10 years showing a 4 degree Fahrenheit increase during that time. Oh, and the really scary forecast for the next week. sacbee.com/news/local/art…

First of a series of great papers by soon to be former lab member Evan Johnson just went online: Towards a heuristic understanding of the storage effect onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/el…

My lab is recruiting 2 graduate students (one M.S. and one Ph.D.) for Spring/Fall 2023. We are interested in identifying optimal movement strategies in heterogeneous environments by using the laboratory system of C. elegans and developing new mathematical theory. Pls contact &RT

Paper with two former PhD students Evan Johnson (2022) and Chris Ray (1997) based on data and ideas from both their times as students just appeared in Eco Lett doi.org/10.1111/ele.14… Interesting ideas about population crashes. Never give up on old data and ideas!!

A really nice paper with firmer student Robert Decker on interplay among sea level rise and an ecosystem engineer just appeared - looking at the tension between sea level rise and a costal engineer that accretes sediment - doi.org/10.1007/s12080…
