Barton Mill and the mill race, looking eastwards along Bishopstoke Road towards Bishopstoke, opposite the junction with Chickenhall Lane. This was a corn mill, operated by C & J Nutbeem, Millers. This view is from the FGO Stuart postcard no 1405

Workers returning to the London and South Western Railway's Carriage and Wagon Works in Bishopstoke Road. This was a familiar scene at the start and end of every day, and at lunch times, both here and the Campbell Road Locomotive Works.

Barton Mill, C & J Nutbeem, Millers, Corn, Hay and Straw Merchants, Bishopstoke Road frontage. This is pretty much where the entrance to the Collins House office block is now, opposite the Chickenhall Lane roundabout.

Shakespeare Road Junior School 1932 or 1933. Much later, the junior school moved to new premises in St Catherine's Road and the infant school remained in the original building.

The Eastleigh Women's Co-operative Guild. Back of photo reads "Eastleigh Women's Co-operative Guild (from Nine Elms)" so presumably they moved down with the Loco Works in 1909.

William Cox, confectioner, on the corner of Market Street and Leigh Road, around 1920. Love that entrance, the fascia and those gas lamps! Sadly replaced by a modern, bland shop front but you can still see the ornate brickwork around the guttering.

Ever wondered what was here before Eastleigh was built? Most of the area now the town centre belonged to two farms; Great Eastley and Little Eastley. This is Great Eastley Farmhouse, which was behind Nutbeem Road in the area covered by the Stranding Street/Cable Street junction.

Bishopstoke Council Infants School, Group 3, 1916. This infants school building was opposite St Mary's Church and has been demolished for housing. A slightly later building on the site, originally the junior school, still stands, and is used by Bishopstoke Community Association.

The old church of St Mary, Riverside, Bishopstoke, built in 1825. This church was demolished in 1910; the tower remained until the 1960s. when it was badly damaged in a fire. The footings of the walls and a low brick wall marking the outline of the tower can still be seen.

This scene from the late 1980s has changed a lot but is still recognisable. Re-construction of the Upper Market Street car park and the building of the underpass under Romsey Road. Eastleigh House has now been refurbished and used as the headquarters of Eastleigh Borough Council.

In 1948 Bakers Coal Yard was at the junction of Romsey Road with Station Hill (to the left). Above the group of people can be seen the chimneys of the long-since demolished Junction Hotel, now used as the station car park.
