Something I noticed for the first time today after messing with IP for 30 years: ICMP echo request has type 8, but ICMP echo reply has type 0, with a bunch of other types in between. How did that happen? Were the type values given out in a raffle?

As I explain to colleagues every so often, rwlocks are only faster than normal locks under certain conditions, and so you should not choose a rwlock just because you need to protect data where readers and writers are distinct.
