Saturday’s M4.1 EQ was only a minor slip along #Kilauea’s décollement, but its widely felt shaking serves as a reminder this area experiences widely felt EQs. #VolcanoWatch usgs.gov/observatories/…

Japan: Today at around 1:58 p.m., an eruption occurred at the summit crater of Sakurajima's Minami-dake mountain in Kagoshima Prefecture. The explosion sent ash rising to a height of 3,700 meters above the crater.

Tenerife, where we take our volcanology students on fieldwork, is slowly having its world-class roadcuts, which expose 2 million years of Las Canadas caldera's volcanic history, covered in concrete. What can we do? @Geotenerife Instituto Geográfico Nacional-O.A.CNIG

Many congratulations to Janina Gillies (Janina Gillies 🌋) who submitted her PhD thesis recently. Her PhD was on textural evolution of pyroclasts in weakly explosive basaltic eruptions, supervised by Ed Llewellin, Dr Fabian Wadsworth & Richard James Brown. Her viva is next week!

IAVCEI is saddened to learn that Hans-Ulrich Schmincke passed away on 24/08/24 at the age of 86. He was SG of IAVCEI between 1983-1991, and awarded the Thorarinsson medal in 1993. During his mandate, he revamped the publication model of BV, a legacy that we profit from today

🌋New paper published today on magma rheology from a deep drilling project in Iceland (Krafla). doi.org/10.1016/j.jvol… This volcanic area is pretty special as we have direct access at the magma storage region and all the surface/sub-surface deposits!

Have you ever wondered why our logo is a volcano coffee cup? It's because the Durham Volcanology group meets every week for discussions, seminars & ECR training and we have called this 'Volcanology Coffee' ever since it started, about 15 years ago! Sometimes, there's even cake!

It's the start of the new academic year and we were excited to hold our first 'Volcanology Coffee' meeting of the term, last week! Great to meet a new cohort of volcanology students and to all catch up on what we've been up to!

Our volcanologists had a great time on the Durham Earth Science booth at the Celebrate Science family festival in Durham last week! We had a make-your-own explosion station, a microscope for looking at thin sections, coloring pages, and a sink or float test (pumice vs obsidian).
