A big trend of the last 20 years has been admin headcount reduction, and I am *convinced* it's a big part of our productivity crisis. Instead of one admin on 25k, you make 10 staff on 2-6x the pay do admin they're slow/inefficient at, costing vastly more. True in NHS/gvt/corps.

You know what would be far more impactful and inclusive nature? Not charging people around the world to read scientific articles on your site.

Everyone saying “no we can’t let the NHS use a proper joined up digital patient database, it’s all part of a plot to privatise British healthcare and sell your data” should be forced to read the dozens (hundreds?) of case studies like these bbc.co.uk/news/health-67…

Many British nuclear safety regulations have costs far in excess of their benefits. How do I know this? The Office for Nuclear Regulation's own words.

In Somerset, a giant science experiment to tackle flooding began 10 years ago. Rather than trying to resist the sea, a large tract of land was surrendered to it. Lots of people were opposed. The local MP called it “an extravagant, ridiculous scheme”🧵

The sheer volume of coverage given to stories about landlords, shareholders and people sending their kids to private schools, possibly having to pay just a little bit more in tax, tells you everything you need to know about what the priorities of the British press really are

I've been hearing today from farmers who don't believe these stats showing that fewer than 500 farm estates per year would pay IHT under the new rules. Or fewer than 200 if two spouses both use the £1m cap. Fewer than 100 (6%) if they also use their nil rate bands.

James Dyson's Dyson Farming Limited owns land and property worth £554,315,000. 20% of that - the new rate of inheritance tax on farmland - is £111m. No wonder he's having a grump.

A reminder that the cost of completely abolishing tuition fees is less than the yearly cost of the triple lock of pensions. Worth remembering when ministers insist that young people must pay even more for the education their parents and grandparents got for free.

The informal poll results are in, & as I feared, most people are running ANOVAs in #R with functions that can give highly misleading (or flat out wrong) results. Follow along to see why using anova() and aov() is usually inadvisable & why you should be using car::Anova() 🧵

A few years back in Yosemite there was a problem with bears getting into trash cans and ppl said ‘why not make the cans more complex?’ And a ranger said ‘bc there is significant overlap between the smartest bear and dumbest human’ and this election feels like that quote to me
